This module comes with our USB Field Upgrade and Configuration Port! We recommend connecting it to a computer BEFORE YOU INSTALL and using our support app "m4cconnect" to do a quick firmware update check. M4cconnect as well as all other information regarding USB update and configuration can be found at You can even configure and activate your favorite module functions and settings on screen before the module is installed in the car! It is a good idea to permanently install the USB cable with the module in the car, leaving the computer plug in an easily accessible spot for later use with a Wifi/3G/4G connected laptop.

If the top does not work properly or at all after installing the module, these tips can be very helpful:

    1) Turn Function 1 (Main Switch) off (Setting 0). The module will be completely passive. If the problem still persists and the top won't work, check all connections. Please also check the green DATA LED on the module!

    2) Function 2 now has a valet mode (Setting 2) on many modules. Valet mode completely disables opening of the top. Check the setting for function 2 and make sure the module is NOT in valet mode!

IMPORTANT: Not all modules have the valet mode! Please check the Operation and Programming Manual!

The DATA LED shows the module status and helps troubleshooting issues during installation:

When the ignition is ON: The LED should BLINK (flash) in a regular pattern (about 1x per second). This indicates that the module is receiving data and should work OK.

When the ignition is OFF: The LED should BLINK (flash) as long as the data bus is still active and turn off after a while (max 5 min) indicating that the car has entered stand-by (sleep) mode.

If the LED is permanently lit with the ignition ON, the module is NOT receiving data from the top controller and all connectors should be checked.

If the LED does NOT light up at all when turning the ignition ON, the module is either not getting power or not receiving ANY data. All connectors should be checked.
    Installation - Steps 1-3
    1. Before starting, open the top and turn the ignition fully off. Remove the wind deflector.
    2. Remove the center coverpiece by pulling straight upward. It is snapped into place in several spots.
    3. Coverpiece uninstalled with the snap hooks visible.
    Installation - Steps 4-6
    4. Remove torx screw of the right cover piece.
    5. Remove the chrome trim at the tip of the right cover piece by the door. It is also just snapped into place.
    6. Chrome trim shown uninstalled. Remove the two torx screws underneath.
    Installation - Steps 7-9
    7. Remove the entire right coverpiece by pulling upward again. It is also snapped in place in the middle. Slide it up over the roll bar.
    8. The roof control unit is hidden under the shielding directly next to the rollbar. See arrow.
    9. Remove the three plugs (1) (2) and (3). Push down on the locking tabs and move the levers over to eject plugs (1) and (2). Grab plug (3) by the sides and push them hard while wiggling the plug out. See the same plug on the module harness for a visual.
    Installation - Steps 10-12
    10. Replace all three plugs with the matching ones on the module wiring harness. Make sure the levers lock and the orange plug snaps into place firmly. Connect the original plugs with the matching sockets on the harness. On the white one make sure the lever latches, press the black one hard into the custom molded receptacle and snap the orange one into the black socket making sure the sides latch.
    11. Connect the module itself and press the unlock button on the remote once. The green DATA LED on the module should now blink to indicate a successful installation.
    12. Important: When connecting the black connector with the grey lever to the big square socket, make sure you push it in really hard! The corners of the plug (see arrows) must not protrude more than about 1mm from the socket housing. Connect the SmartTOP module to the wiring harness and tap the unlock button on the remote once. The green LED on the module should now blink, showing all connections are good. Attach the module with the supplied sticker (we also suggest connecting and running the USB cable to an accessible spot for later updates or configuration via laptop) and reassemble everything. Configure the functions and settings of the module according to our Operation and Programming manual.
